Total Investor
--------------
Your Complete Market Advisor
Overview
--------
Total Investor is an integrated portfolio management and technical
analysis tool which uses the Lotus 1-2-3 (Version 2.00 and greater),
Symphony, and Quattro Pro environments. The program can be used to
keep track of securities and transactions, chart stocks, and make
trading decisions based on technical indicators. With just a few
keystrokes, the information you need is displayed on the screen. With
Total Investor, there is no need to quit one package and load another.
In the past, this combination of features required separate and more
expensive programs.
All of these powerful capabilities of Total Investor are accessed
through a menu driven command structure. You are not required to learn
a new programming language or understand the intricacies of the Lotus
spreadsheet environment. Every function needed to monitor a portfolio,
chart, and analyze securities can be implemented with the simple touch
of a key. The menu commands are named after the terms of investing and
not in arcane computer jargon.
Both versions of Total Investor can maintain current quotes for
your portfolio and historical quotes for charting and analysis. A
manual data entry mode is supported so that price and volume data can
be entered directly from a newspaper's financial section. With the
Symphony version, downloading quotes or historical data is done
automatically through the use of a modem linked with Dow Jones News
Retrieval. Data Link templates for Total Investor for 1-2-3 are now
available for Compuserve, Dow Jones News/Retrieval, and the FNN Signal
quote receiver. These templates allow you to easily keep your
portfolio and charts updated. All of the historical data is stored in
Lotus compatible files should you wish to do analysis on your own using
Symphony or 1-2-3.
The windowed environment of Total Investor allows maximum
flexibility for viewing data. Indicators and charts can be viewed
either individually or simultaneously. Seeing both at the same time
allows better correlation of the action of an indicator to price
trends. A zoom function is supported that displays the last few days
of trading with finer resolution.
Portfolio Management
--------------------
When Total Investor starts up, the portfolio area is displayed.
The program keeps track of all your security data including:
Description
Date of Purchase
Purchase Cost
Current Price
Gain
Symbol
Commission
A summary of the portfolio is shown in the Totals Window on the
same display. Any time a portfolio is updated with new prices or a
transaction is made the net change is displayed in the Totals window.
The price of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and any change in its
-1-
value since the last update is given as a comparative measure. Year to
date commissions are also shown as a means to track brokerage costs.
Powerful editing capabilities allow you to enter, modify, split,
short, or sell any position. Securities that can be held in the
portfolio include stocks, bonds, options, mutual funds, and U.S.
Treasury issues. Total Investor will also track capital gains
throughout the year. These gains can be sorted into long term or short
term with a holding period that can be varied.
The report features of Total Investor provide useful tools for
portfolio management. The database function of Lotus is used to sort
the securities. The portfolio can be sorted by date, amount, number of
shares or whatever factor the program tracks. The allocation between
securities and cash can also be displayed graphically. Another
capability of Total Investor allows you to plot the value of your
portfolio over the security historical data range stored. This can
then be compared against the Dow Jones Industrial Average to display
the relative strength of your combined holdings.
Charts and Indicators
---------------------
The technical analysis functions of Total Investor offer a wide
range of tools to aid the investor in decision making. The five major
categories of tools include charts, volume indicators, relative
strength, moving averages, and oscillators. Each indicator can be
displayed separately or with the stock to aid analysis. Indicator
graphs can also be stored for later printing using the Printgraph
function of Lotus. The individual indicators covered by the program
include:
Charts- Plot Price, Volume, last year or zoom .
Volume- Accumulation, Cashflow,On Balance, Positive,
Negative, and Ease of Movement
Relative Strength- Stock vs DJIA or other issues, Wilder
RSI
Moving Averages- Simple or Exponential
Oscillators- Momentum, user selectable with smoothing
Statistics- Overview security performance
The Total Investor manual explains how these indicators are
derived and their use. A section of the manual called "Using Total
Investor" describes a trading method which uses a synergistic
combination of these indicators. A complete bibliography is given for
additional reading.
Total Investor Data Links
-------------------------
HFS Data Links automate the updating process for the portfolios
and historical quote files of Total Investor. This relieves you of the
tedium of manual data entry. Data links are available for Compuserve,
FNN Signal, and Dow Jones News/Retrieval.
-2-
FNN Signal is a data service that uses a receiver to obtain quotes
which are transmitted by a local FM radio station or by satellite. The
Signal Data Link is a 1-2-3 template that interfaces with the Signal
receiver to update Total Investor portfolios and HQFILES. This a very
low cost way to keep an extensive security database . End of day
service currently costs $65 per month for an unlimited number of
quotes. Please note, the FNN Linc program that ties 1-2-3 to the
receiver via RS-232 will not operate with Quattro Pro.
The Compuserve and DJN/R Data Links require a modem and
communication software such as Procomm to capture quotes from these
data services in ASCII files. Both historical and current data is
available from these sources. The data link templates will then
process this ASCII data to update the portfolios and HQFILES of Total
Investor.
The Compuserve Data Link can generate a batch file, called a
TICFILE, that is used to automatically query Compuserve for each
security in a Total Investor portfolio. This TICFILE is uploaded to
Compuserve which will then create a ASCII PRN file filled with quotes
for you to download. The QQUOTE database of Compuserve is used for
current quotes while the PRICE database is used for historical quotes.
Per quote charges of $.01 per current quote and $.05 per historical
quote apply in addition to online charges.
The DJN/R Data Link can generate script files for Procomm that
will automate the data retrieval function. These script files will
automatically query the database and capture the session in an ASCII
file. The //CQE database of DJN/R is used for current quotes and the
//HQ database is used for historical data. The //HQ database carries
approximately 1 year of data on preferred and common stocks, warrants,
and rights. Only online charges apply to these databases, not per
quote charges.
Data Link templates are provided with on-disk documentation.
Detailed instructions and a tutorial are included.
